International Dawn Chorus Day website folio preview

The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country: International Dawn Chorus Day Website

The International Dawn Chorus Day is a worldwide series of events, that annually celebrates the wonder and natural splendor of bird chorus during mornings first light of spring and early summer. The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country wanted to provide a means to allow people to register their own event and/or access information about events that were being held locally to them.

Deliverables

To create a website that would support the event day, and also provide the framework for subsequent years events.

Crayfish Design were asked to generate the website design, concept and principle graphic components, that would be used to show different aspects of the events. In order to produce the final product we were required to work in tandem with a third party website development company.

Concept and understanding

The International Dawn Chorus Day is celebrated by thousands of people in communities across the UK and the World. The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country wanted to develop a website that would act as a promotional tool for event day organisers and as a reference portal for visitors.

The administrative side of the web application would allow organisers to register and upload information about their event including post event photography and bird song recordings.

This information will then be translated into a coherent site design that needs to be intuitive, functional and appealing to an international audience.

Solution

As it was important that the website had a strong aesthetic appeal, we wanted to create a design that reflected the warmth of mornings first light along with an all-embracing feeling of birds.

To help with international understanding, the 'International Dawn Chorus Day' title was abbreviated to IDCD within the domain name, we also felt that with the annual promotion of the website it would benefit from a simple iconic logo design to provide an element of branding to the event.

To further reflect the worldwide nature of the event and provide graphical impact, we created a sequence of web banners to show the diversity of birds across the continents.
